The 2026 Pantone Color of the Year is not a joyful color as most designers expected, but a shade of white called Cloud Dancer. Socials were quick to react with heated debate which grew into a campaign to declare a “People’s 2026 Color of the Year”. The people’s choice is a velvety green-blue called Phthalo Green (rhymes with “shallow”). The Pantone Institute’s “color anthropologists” may have misjudged the court of popular opinion, but we believe Pantone’s choice is an opportunity to style an interior design collaboration between Cloud Dancer and Phthalo Green to create a visual and emotional bridge between winter and spring.

The Pantone Institute describes Cloud Dancer as a shade that represents “relaxation, reflection, and creativity” and a way to “step back” from visual “overstimulation”. Phthalo Green represents tranquility, growth, renewal, healing and wellbeing. If 2026 is a year of digital detox and self-care, then Cloud Dancer and Phthalo Green represent a color pairing that will help you achieve these goals. The massively popular card game Magic: the Gathering knows that white and green are stronger together. The game’s magic realms are represented by white, black, red, blue and green. The white and green color pairing is considered “an excellent foundation for a strong, cohesive strategy”. The same strategy is true for interior design in 2026.
Even The Pantone Institute itself got on board with Phthalo Green in 2025 (and maybe this is why everyone assumed they would choose a strong color for 2026). The Institute collaborated with Julien Sebban to design a guest suite at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in London. The shade they chose was similar to Phthalo Green. Sebban described the suite’s color with words similar to Pantone’s description of Cloud Dancer: “serenity and strength . . . playful in one moment, tranquil in the next.”

A fun fact about white is that equal parts of the primary colors of light – red, green and blue – produce white light. Yet another reason why Cloud Dancer is a natural partner to Phthalo Green is because it represents color. Green plants are a superb way to style a restful, healthy, self-care living space, but these positive feelings can also be enhanced with white and green all-natural wool rugs. We have a few to suggest like our green room-sized hand-knotted wool rug with natural dyes. Its Khotan design features cloud-like orbs that float on a tranquil sea of green. Sparrows feature in our hand-knotted Peshawar wool rug. The birds look like delicate clouds balanced on pink flowering branches. Our Mamluk hand-knotted wool rug will immerse you in Phthalo Green wellbeing, while our cloud gray hand-knotted wool Peshawar represents a “blank slate” to help you visually detox.

Pairing is essential in 2026. Pair your use of social media with quiet times of digital detox. Cloud Dancer and Phthalo Green are great colors on their own, but for maximum effect in 2026, style them together and enjoy the positive vibes.
