The style of the moment is traditional, but not like your parents and grandparents knew it. Instead of a strict interpretation where everything in a room fits into a definition of “traditional” (and by that we mean brown heritage furniture in styles that hark to previous centuries), the current trend for Neo-Traditional interiors is a tribute not a clone. It’s worth noting too that Neo-Traditional is not the same thing as the style known as Maximalism. The former is a comfortable, less cluttered style, whereas Maximalism packs its design punch through a glut of objects which in the wrong hands can look like a room’s got everything in it but the kitchen sink.
Neo-Traditional mixes heritage pieces (which are often quite affordable) with new contemporary design plus a few pieces of mid-century modern design objects or furniture. But Neo-Traditional isn’t just about furniture or objects. There are three “secret” ingredients essential to create the look. The first and most important is a traditional Persian-style rug (new, vintage, or antique); followed by books on bookshelves, plus a few organic elements – natural wood (a driftwood branch for example) and green plants, particularly large ones.
While there is an element of nostalgia in Neo-Traditional style (we all want the “before” time pre-Covid-19 don’t we?) the look is current and reflective of 21st century style. It’s interesting to note the Neo-Traditional look is happening in fashion too like long “prairie” style dresses by hip designers like The Vampire’s Wife. Comfort is essential to making the Neo-Traditional style work.
What we might call “classic” or “conventional” beauty is an inherent component of the Neo-Traditional look, but comfort – especially in times of pandemic crisis – is critical. Plump upholstery you sink into, throw blankets for chairs and sofas, cushions, and rugs woven from natural fibers like wool. Natural fibers bring an organic element to the look, but natural fibers also create a comforting surface to walk on and for your pets and children to lounge on. When the rug is hand woven or hand-knotted (as are all the rugs in our inventory) the feeling of comfort and the look of comfort will anchor your room in style.
As our images show,Neo-Traditional style is at its best with a Persian style Oriental rug. The rug doesn’t need to be antique nor does it need to be strictly classical in style. Why not consider one of our Persian-style rugs that have been updated with new contemporary colorways or with “erased” areas?
