“Green Is The Colour Of The Moment” declares a headline in the spring 2025 issue of a popular British interiors magazine. But across the pond in the US, we’re here to tell you green is having more than just a moment – green has leaped beyond trends to become an essential “new neutral” in interior design.

There are many theories for green’s popularity. Is it a rejection of “sad beige” and the neutral aesthetic that includes “millennial grey”, Scandi décor, and the austere minimal interiors prescribed by Marie Kondo? Or is it thanks to Wicked (and its highly anticipated sequel Wicked: For Good) and Ephalba green? Or maybe our lean to green is due to a surge in nature hobbies like birding (an essential character trait of Detective Cordelia Cupp in Netflix’s hit show The Residence), forest bathing, and people discovering regional folklore and traditional seasonal festivals? Whatever the reason, this much we know: green is a must-have color for home décor in 2025.

Green’s popularity has grown so much that Southern Living magazine says 2025 is the year green and blue join the neutral category as “new neutrals”. No longer are neutrals restricted to “non-color” creams, grays, beiges and browns. Neutrals now include two of nature’s most expressive, relaxing and calming colors. Designer DuVäl Reynolds told Southern Living that “green and blue offer a fresh take, allowing for more personality while still maintaining a universally familiar feel,” while he added that green creates “a natural, serene touch, making the space feel grounded.”

Introducing green to your home is more than an abundance of house plants and green accessories and paint. Green is grounded in being mindful of how to make a home an eco-conscious and healthy environment. You can achieve these goals by choosing handmade wool rugs and avoiding man-made fibers. Michel Pastoureau’s 2013 book on the history of the color green includes his prediction that “green is going to save the world.” Green, he says, represents “health, freedom, hope”. Wool is a healthy, natural, renewable fiber. A wool rug is an ally in your home. The fiber core of wool absorbs moisture while its outer surface repels moisture, which means that most spills on your wool rug can be relatively easily cleaned. More bonuses include wool’s natural soil, oil and flame resistance.
Being green is healthy. And it’s possible that choosing an eco-green wool rug that is also green in color may enhance a feeling of hope and happiness in your home. Our favourite green rugs include our fern green hand knotted wool Moroccan weave runner with its joyful Flying Kite design; our hand knotted wool Khotan Oriental Rug in soothing shades of green; and our immersive sea green hand knotted wool Mamluk design Peshwar rug. Is green going to save the world? The color itself may not, but thinking green and being eco-conscious is part of positive collective action to nurture and save our precious green earth.
