Shades of brown are winning fans throughout the 2025 home market. Pantone’s 2025 color of the year “mocha mousse” is described by the company as a “nurturing” shade aligned with chocolate, coffee and comfort. We think brown’s growing popularity moves beyond edibles and is more aligned with the nurturing qualities of Mother Nature. Our view is shared by Elle Decor magazine which nominates “grounding colors” as a win for 2025, while the design team at renowned Blackberry Farm resort is “redefining earth tones” to update its neutral-based rooms to a “richer palette” that reflects the resort’s location in the Great Smoky Mountains.

National realtor Zillow released its annual trends analysis for its 2024 national listings. The company’s trend expert Amanda Pendleton revealed a spike in search terms such as “warmth, character and comfort” while the search word “cozy” spiked 35%. Zillow’s color analysis translated these popular search terms as the growing desire of home buyers for “colors found in nature, like greens, browns and deep reds”. The message from all of these design experts and Zillow’s users is clear: colors and textures inspired by Mother Nature are a key theme for 2025.

Related to grounding shades of brown are the sub-themes of sustainability and second-hand. Buying vintage and second-hand is popular with Gen Z and many Millennials who desire unique examples of vintage “brown furniture” and objects with “patina” – meaning attractive signs of pre-loved wear. These characteristics are a feature of many of our handmade rugs where character and comfort combine with grounding natural fibres and cozy earth-based palettes.

Some of our recommendations of pre-loved vintage and antique rugs with nurturing textures, natural fibres, rich patina and colours that would make Mother Nature proud include our sumptuous 1930s vintage wool handmade Persian Kerman. Its enviable patina features multiple shades of brown and bone enhanced with reds and yellow. Or if you prefer more color, what about our antique Persian hand-knotted wool Lilihan? Its background shade of crimson reminds us of a summer sunset admired from a porch at Blackberry Farm. And don’t forget shades of brown include gold like the golden brown in our antique hand knotted wool Persian Mohojaran Sarouk Mat where a complementary shade of salmon elevates the shimmering quality of the rug’s glow-up brown.

Amanda Pendleton believes “homeowners and buyers today are looking to the past to create a sense of warmth, character, and comfort in even the most high-tech environments”. She also reminds us that home is a feeling “not just a checklist of practical features”. Be inspired to create a “feeling home” in 2025. Retire sad beige and Yeezy nude neutrals and replace them with Mother Nature’s grounding colors. House Beautiful magazine declared that in 2025 we should choose vintage to extend the life of well-crafted pieces and create a shortcut to a creative and personalized home. There is no easier way to achieve this “shortcut” than starting with a vintage rug in Mother Nature colors that will provide a grounding feature for your unique home.
